Engagement with the Ministry of Trade and Industry

In April 2026, the Sierra Leone Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (SLCCIA) Council held a high-level engagement with the Honourable Minister of Trade and Industry and his team as part of the Chamber’s ongoing commitment to strengthening collaboration between the public and private sectors. The meeting provided an important platform for constructive dialogue on issues affecting the business environment and reaffirmed the shared commitment of both institutions to promoting sustainable economic growth, industrial development, and private sector competitiveness in Sierra Leone.

The discussions centred on several strategic priorities aimed at improving the operating environment for businesses. Key among these was the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), with both parties recognising the importance of ensuring that Sierra Leonean businesses are well positioned to benefit from regional and continental trade opportunities. The meeting also explored plans to revive the Chamber’s flagship program, including the Trade Fair, Annual Dinner, and Business Networking Lunches, which have historically served as important platforms for business promotion, networking, investment attraction, and policy dialogue.

The Council further highlighted the importance of expanding the Chamber’s membership base and strengthening member engagement to ensure broader representation of the private sector. Members also raised a number of challenges affecting businesses across the country, including limited access to finance, the high cost and unreliability of electricity, inadequate infrastructure, and shortages of skilled labour. These issues were presented as critical constraints to business growth, investment, and job creation, requiring coordinated action between Government and the private sector.

Another significant area of discussion was the proposal for the establishment of a dedicated Trade Fair and Exhibition Centre to provide a permanent venue for trade exhibitions, investment promotion activities, and business networking events. The proposal was recognised as an important initiative that could enhance the visibility of Sierra Leonean businesses, promote local products, and attract both domestic and international investment.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to strengthen collaboration through the establishment of a joint working group that will drive discussions on identified priority areas and facilitate regular engagement between the Ministry and the Chamber. The Honourable Minister reaffirmed Government’s commitment to working closely with the Chamber in addressing private sector concerns and advancing reforms that support a more competitive and enabling business environment.

This engagement further reinforced the Chamber’s role as the leading voice of the private sector and demonstrated its continued commitment to advocating for policies and partnerships that promote trade, investment, enterprise development, and sustainable economic growth in Sierra Leone.
